BRIEF OVERVIEW
Frequent, recurring stock-outs of essential drugs and medical supplies as well as stock expiration and waste continue to challenge the health system performance in Sierra Leone and beyond.
Some of the underlying and systemic causes include:
- Disconnect between demand management and quantification,
- Procurement planning and timing of distribution,
- The continued ‘push’ system
- Poor storage facilities at all levels,
- Transportation challenges
- Poor monitoring systems and lack of supply chain performance metrics,
- And bottlenecks related to timely clearance at the port.

Optimizing the Supply Chain
With the focus of ensuring everyone in the country has an equal opportunity to access health product, Pharma Twenty20 seek to contribute effort to ensure the health supply chain is adequately optimized across the country.
Building Capacities
In order to build resilient health supply system, the right human resource with adequate capacities are required. Pharma Twenty20 is also focused to build capacities of staff in health supply chain systems including warehousing, distribution, LMIS, M&E, and QA.
Developing Supply Chain Design
As part of an effort to building a resilient health supply system, Pharma Twenty20 will support public and private facilities, NGO and INGOs in designing a supply chain system that will improve the functioning of these entities.
Supply Chain System Analysis
With focus on private facilities, NGOs and INGOs, analyse supply chain function with respect to quantification, procurement, warehousing, and distribution. Identify challenges and proffer possible solution in order to improve on supply chain function.
Product and Premise Registration.
Facilitate product and premise registration for private pharmacy business owners and other organizations in order to reduce waiting times and improve opportunity cost.
Training and Research
On behalf of institutions and organizations, conduct much needed research in health supply chain management and make available first-hand data and evidence to inform decision making processes and focused training.
Christian Health Association of Sierra Leone
Development of Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) for the pharmaceutical and supply chain unit for the Christian Health Association of Sierra Leone (CHASL) to streamline the pharmaceutical and supply chain practices across all member churches in Sierra Leone. 12 different SoPs were developed. It has a total of 13 churches across the country.
